PSSI’s Managing Director, Dr. Jana Robinson, took part in what many called a “historic” NATO Summit in Vilnius on July 11-12, 2023.
The parallel NATO Public Forum was organized by the Eastern Europe Studies Center and supported by the German Marshall Fund, Munich Security Conference, and the Atlantic Council. This distinguished gathering, opened by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, and including special guests, such as the President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel, discussed: Sweden’s accession to the Alliance; the Ukrainian membership issues and military assistance; the new NATO-Ukraine Council and the results of its first meeting; deterrence in the physical, digital, and economic space; the new regional defense plans (called the most comprehensive since the Cold War); new Member State defense pledges to increase military spending to 2% of GDP as a “solid base”; the call to strengthen European defense cooperation; NATO’s position on China; implications of climate change on NATO’s military operations; and how to raise readiness for hybrid threats and harness emerging technologies for strategic advantage.
